Around Room 122

Our learners have been busy thinking and learning. We are so proud of them as they continue to amaze and inspire us. They work hard everyday and have demonstrated so much growth. Here is a snippet into thinking and learning in our room. (You will notice that math and literacy are integrated into everything we do.)

Measurement provocation
Lots of patterns of different lengths

Writing about their creations by tracing the shapes and then describing the shapes they used
Learning about 3D shapes

Finding words around the room and then finding the vowels in the words they wrote.
We love this vowel song!

This JK found the vowels in the alphabet cards and came to show us.

We love to play 'sentence detective' to determine which sentence is the correct one.
Brainstorming ways that we can be good friends
We are great writers!
Stretch break!

Representing 1-5 in different ways.
Creating growth patterns using buttons.
We love letter sound Bingo!

Writing math sentences and using fingers as manipulatives
The students found out that you can put 5 straws in the bears. We asked the students if the bears each have 5 straws, how many straws do you have? Students worked to show their thinking.

Learners enjoy reflecting on their learning journey by looking through their portfolios.
Writing about their building creations.

Daily writing (see below for the retell of 'The 3 Little Pigs'

Students began to create spinning tops using cubes. They wanted to time each spinner to see which one would last the longest. These two worked together to time and record each trial.

International Polar Bear Day

What an exciting week in our classroom!

Our learners have been asking lots of questions. We have been continuing to build our knowledge about polar bears through researching and watching videos. We sent some of our artwork to Polar Bears International and they invited us to join them for International Polar Bear Day. Our learners wondered what this was, so we began to explore their website for more information.

We realized it was about saving the polar bears because their habitat is changing and the ice is melting. Throughout the week, we investigated what this meant and what we can do to help. They created signs to help other people in the school learn about 'Polar Bear Day'.

Our classroom door so people walking by would see our posters.

This picture book taught us about the concept of 'Global Warming' and ways we can help prevent climate change
The students were inspired by the polar bears in the book to make signs to tell people about what is happening to the polar bears.

When Polar Bear Day finally arrived, our learners were so excited! We did many things in class to celebrate the day. We saved energy throughout the day by keeping our lights and computers off. Students brought their stuffed animals and we had a story at the 'campfire'.

Writing about their stuffed animals
A.S had a polar bear sweater and sutffies!
C.M's polar bear pyjamas
Polar Bear crafts

To encourage other students and teachers to help save the polar bears, our learners created presentations in small groups to share with other classes. They worked incredibly hard to write their script, practice and them present. We are SO proud of them!

Here are their presentations:

We really hope you'll take some time to look into the plight of the polar bears and do your part to reduce pollution and energy waste.

Save the polar bears!
